Shamballa Sanctuary
Shamballa comprises 1200 hectares of Ceres/Tankwa Karoo plains rising up into the Swartruggens range. Comprising mostly Succulent Karoo Flora which supports many bird species including the Cape Eagle Owl, Black Eagle, Lizard Buzzard, Cape sugar bird and numerous endemic species of the area.
Fauna include mountain Reebok, klipspringer, Rock Hyrax, Baboon, Rabbit, Black backed Jackal, Serval, Leopard, and numerous reptile species including Blue headed lizards, many different snake species and the angulated tortoise. Springbok and Gemsbok are to be reintroduced.
Most visitors find themselves captivated by the incredible night skies and the moon rises over the Roggenberge to the east. A haven of silence, contemplation, retreat and replenishment for body, mind and soul where the open plains expand the mind, and the mountains open the heart.
Shamballa Sanctuary is a venue for small intimate workshops, or private group or family getaways, artist or writers’ retreats, and the occasional wedding. Most power requirements are either Solar or Wind driven. Our newly established organic veggie garden is an exciting project in our endeavors to be more self- reliant. Meals can be provided for an extra charge with prior arrangement.
