The nearby village of Spezet has a number of excellent restaurants, several traditional bars and a charcuterie, chemist, boulangeries and post-office. The neighbouring town of Chateauneuf du Faou has supermarkets, restaurants and most things expected from a town. The weekly market is a must to visit, traditional in every way. Boats and canoes can be hired in Chateauneuf to explore the Aulne River and canal.
At Chateaulin there is a Leclerc's hypermarket which caters for every need and the prices are reasonable. There are also opportunities for other outdoor pursuits such as golf, walking /hiking and horse riding, although these are more expensive. Anyone interested in folklore and ancient monuments will have many sites to visit in the vicinity.
Chateauneuf du Faou is only 8km away a beautiful Breton market town nestling in the Montagnes Noires. 18 bars, several good restaurants (recommend Le Relais de Cornouaille), regular Breton Festivals and a brilliant Jazz Festival on the banks of the beautiful River l'Aulne in August. The town is amazingly unspoiled and underplayed in all the guide books. The town of Carhaix is only 7km away. In late July it hosts a famous 3-day rock festival (U2, Bruce Springsteen, Muse and the Killers have recently played there).
The medieval city of Quimper is a little over 20 minutes away with its spectacular cathedral, fascinating winding streets, half timbered buildings and chic shops, bars and restaurants. A little further inland lies the quaint lakeside town of Huelgoat with mystery walks into the forest with its enormous and fascinating boulders. Chateaulin is the largest main town to the house approximately 15 minutes away by car, and has a very reliable train station, which goes to other larger towns like Brest or Quimper.
Chateaulin is located on the banks of the river l'Aulne, it has plenty of shops, bars restaurants, banks and is renowned for its famous salmon run through the town with day permits readily available.
