Rookhope is an ideal base for walking, cycling and touring holidays, there are plenty of amenities in nearby villages as well as major attractions within easy reach. Heritage railways, birdwatching, fishing and even skiing (in season) are all there to make an amazing break.
Nearby towns give even more scope to fill your stay, with Durham Cathedral, the Bowes Museum, Beamish Open Air Museum, Head of Steam and many other English Heritage and National Trust properties. The jewel for the region of course is Hadrian's Wall, a short drive North, following the route of the Roman legions along the A68 roman road.
Weardale also boasts a fascinating industrial history, with extensive remains of the lead and fluorspar mining works. You can visit Nenthead mine and for all ages, Killhope mine has some amazing attractions for children and a chance to go underground and work like the children of the 1840s did.
For rail enthusiasts, the Weardale Railway and South Tyne Railway both run services for steam enthusiasts.
There are plenty of galleries, cafes and visitor centres as well to buy gifts for your friends.
