Welle House
East Prawle is situated in one of the most attractive and unspoilt parts of the South West peninsula, in the temperate and much loved South Hams. The surrounding area, within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, comprises farmland and some of the most beautiful coastline in the British Isles. A paradise for walkers and bird watchers alike.
Welle House is situated within walking distance of the South West Coastal Path and Prawle Point, Devon’s most southerly point. The local beaches at Lannacombe Bay, Gara Rock and Millbay in East Portlemouth on the Salcombe Estuary, are easily accessible, as are the popular fishing beaches at Slapton Sands, Beesands, and Hallsands. We are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as within a Coastal Preservation Area and much of the coastline forms part of the Heritage Coast.
East Prawle is also well known for its local pub, the Pigs Nose (CAMRA Pub of the Year 2005 - South Devon Area), which particularly epitomises the local character of these parts. Please note that, out of season, the Pig’s Nose is closed Sunday night and all day Monday. Other local Pubs serving food may be found on our links page. Kingsbridge, capital of the South Hams and centre for local shops and entertainment is only 10 miles away.
We are just on the fringe of the village (and within a short stagger of the excellent Pigs Nose Inn) and about ten miles south east of Kingsbridge, which is the area centre for the South Hams and has a comprehensive range of shopping and recreational facilities.
The night sky is virtually free of light pollution, and on a clear night can see the Milky Way in all it's glory, shooting stars and satellites without ever trying too hard.
The renowned sailing town of Salcombe is about fifteen miles by road or two miles by passenger ferry across the Kingsbridge Estuary from East Portlemouth.
The historic naval town of Dartmouth with numerous shops and restaurants is about fifteen miles distant. The beautiful River Dart provides excellent opportunities for boating and sailing activities, and Dartmouth Golf and Country Club and the Woodlands Leisure Park are both about twelve miles distant. There are also golf courses at Bigbury and Thurlestone, flanking the mouth of the River Avon. The rugged splendour of Dartmoor National Park is about twenty miles to the north.
