Weardale Cottage
Characterful cottage (originally two houses) with original stone floors and beamed ceilings downstairs. Very spacious, with separate lounge and dining room, double bedroom and twin bedroom.
The lounge has a solid fuel stove (coal and wood provided) and dining room has a solid fuel Rayburn. The cottage has central heating; there is a washing machine in a separate utility room. Off-road parking, secluded sunny garden, with garden furniture. Solar water heating. TV, DVD player, CD player. Bathroom has shower, toilet and hand basin; double bedroom has ensuite toilet. (Please note that the cottage has two steep staircases and stone-flagged floors, and may therefore not be suitable for very small children or anyone with mobility problems).
In the village is a pub and well-stocked co-op with post-office. There are many excellent walks from the doorstep, and from the cottage you are within 30 miles of Durham City, Northumberland, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.
Locally, the market town of Stanhope has a farmers' market every 4th Saturday of the month, and features a range of shops including butcher, baker, hardware store, post office and co-op. Several pubs in Stanhope do food.
At the Durham Dales centre in Stanhope, there is an excellent tourist office and a selection of craft shops and cafe. There is even an outdoor swimming pool, open May to September, in Stanhope.
Weardale is a rugged area very similar to the Yorkshire Dales, but is much quieter and ideal for a getaway break. It is 35 miles from Newcastle, and is a great base for exploring the whole of the north-east of England. Short breaks are available from 2 nights. Ideal for walkers, cyclists and families.
